Complete Measuring Workbook
This workbook summarizes most of the information available online, including traditional shutter and plantation shutter specifications and available configurations.
The workbook also contains detailed measuring instructions, which is necessary for ordering shutters. We present multiple methods of installation so you can select the best approach for your windows. You will then provide us with the window dimensions, and we will construct the shutter units, making all of the necessary allowances for fit. All components necessary for installation are included with every order.
The workbook does NOT contain pricing, which is available exclusively online.
Inside Mount - Direct to Jamb (INJ)
Suggested for deep square window openings with a wood window jamb. Shutters attach directly to the window jamb using butt hinges that are mortised into the hanging stiles of the shutter. Traditional style shutters require a ¾” mounting surface and 1-1/4” total depth for the louvers to rotate. Plantation shutters require a 1” mounting surface and at least 1-7/8” total depth for the louvers to rotate.
Inside Mount - On Rear Hang Strips (INH)
Suggested for deep window openings that have a plaster, drywall, or wood window jamb, or windows that are not square. Shutters attach to rear hang strips with adjustable offset L-shaped hinges. The hang strips hide behind the shutter panels and attach to the window jamb with screws. The hang strips and offset hinges adjust during installation for easy alignment in windows that are not square. Traditional style shutters require a 2” mounting surface and total depth for the louvers to rotate. Plantation shutters require at least a 2-3/8” mounting surface and total depth for the louvers to rotate.
Outside Mount - Frame on Wall (FOW)
Suggested for full height shutter units installed on windows that do NOT have existing trim. An L-shaped frame surrounds the shutter unit on three or four sides. The frame attaches to the wall just to the outside of the window opening. An FOW mounting method is most often used when an inside installation is not possible or the opening is out of square.
Outside Mount - Frame on Trim (FOT)
Suggested for full height shutter units installed on windows that have existing trim. An L-shaped frame surrounds the shutter unit on three or four sides. The frame attaches to the face of the existing trim outside of the window opening. An FOT mounting method is most often used when an inside installation is not possible or the opening is out of square. A ¾” or wider flat surface on the trim face is necessary for installation.
Outside Mount - Hang Strip on Wall (HOW)
Suggested for café type shutter units installed on windows that do NOT have existing trim. Hang strips attach to the wall slightly beyond the window opening on each side of the shutter unit. The installation method is typically used when an inside installation is not possible or the opening is out of square.
Outside Mount - Hang Strip on Trim (HOT)
Suggested for café type shutter units installed on windows that have existing trim. Hang strips attach to each side of the shutter unit to the face of the existing trim outside of the window opening. The installation method is typically used when an inside installation is not possible or the opening is out of square.
