Plantation Shutter Finishes

Shutters may be ordered unfinished. Unfinished shutters allow the end user to paint or stain the shutters prior to installation. All Horizon shutters are made with solid components and are fully sanded before shipping. Shutters are offered in grades suitable to either paint or stain.

Paint grade shutters arrive suitable for painting, but should be primed and sanded before paint is applied. Shutters are not sold primed. White magnets to hold the shutters in a closed position are included with paint grade shutters.

Stain grade shutters are constructed with components chosen for uniform grain. Shutters are shipped sanded and ready to stain. Brown magnets to hold the shutters in a closed position are included with stain grade shutters.

Custom Colors

Custom paint and stain colors are available for colors outside the range of our standard selections.

To specify a custom color please select either "Paint-Custom Color" or "Stain-Custom Color" in the finish color drop down on the order form. Then send a smooth, dried unreturnable sample (minimum size 3” x 3”) to:

Horizon Interior Shutters
PO Box 6926
Leawood, Kansas 66206

Our factory will mix the finish for your shutters and send you a sample for approval. Finishing will not begin until your approval is received. Bear in mind that a finish appearance changes as the finish material cures over time. Therefore, a custom color match may become more or less satisfactory.

Cost

$74 per color for custom paint match (light colors only). There will be an additional charge for dark colors.
$94 per color for custom stain match.

Custom Colors will add approximately 15 working days to production time.

Important Definitions

Match - nearly equal or similar to, go well together, complimentary, suit one another.
Duplicate - an exact copy, a double, corresponding exactly.

While we routinely "match" paint colors and some stain colors, we are unable to "duplicate" colors. We mix our own paint and do not use paint from other manufacturers. All finishes will have a smooth satin / semi-gloss sheen. All of the following would have to be identical to achieve duplication:

  • The species, texture, and moisture content of the wood.
  • The degree of sanding and surface preparation.
  • The type of filters, sealers, and/or primers used.
  • The specific type and formulation of the finish.
  • The degree of sheen (gloss).
  • The number of finish top coats applied.
  • The temperature and humidity when the finish was applied.
  • The temperature and humidity during the drying period.

It is important to note that different eyes see colors differently, while weather conditions, lighting conditions (daylight, incandescent, fluorescent), and nearby reflective surfaces affect how colors appear. Therefore, exact duplication should not be expected.

Stain samples with heavy grain (oak, walnut, etc.) are very difficult to match. Please provide sample on a light grain wood.

Hardware is available in either Bright Brass, Antique Brass, or Silver.

All necessary hardware for installation is included with each order. Available hardware finishes include Bright Brass, Antique Brass, and Silver.

The type of hinge provided depends on the shutter style and mounting method selected. Standard butt hinges are shown here. Hinges are mortised into the shutter panel to reduce light gaps. Knobs are not supplied for plantation shutters.
